KAWS

Born Brian Donnelly in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, is a globally renowned artist whose work bridges the worlds of fine art and popular culture. Beginning his career as a graffiti artist in the 1990s, KAWS initially gained recognition by subverting advertisements in public spaces. His signature motifs—such as the "XX" eyes and his iconic character Companion—became synonymous with his distinct style, blending street art with a polished, cartoon-like aesthetic.
KAWS studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he honed his skills and expanded his creative reach. His work spans various media, including painting, sculpture, and product design, often drawing from popular figures like Mickey Mouse, the Simpsons, and SpongeBob SquarePants. By reimagining these familiar icons, KAWS explores themes of consumerism, isolation, and the human condition.
With exhibitions in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the UK, and the Contemporary Art Museum of Fort Worth, KAWS has become a major figure in contemporary art. His limited-edition toys and collaborations with brands like Nike, Uniqlo, and Dior have further solidified his cultural impact, making his work accessible to a wide and diverse audience.
